About

I am Deputy Dean in the Faculty of Computing, Engineering and Media at De Montfort University. My practice and research sits within emerging technologies and the development of immersive experiential films. I hold a PhD in this area and have recently advised the UK Government on immersive technologies.

Previously, I was Head of the Birmingham School of Media at Birmingham City University and Deputy Head of Media and Performing Arts at Coventry University and Journalism. I am committed to transforming the student experience through engagement opportunities, whilst promoting inclusive learning strategies. I established the HuffPost Centre for Journalism at BCU and in March 2014, I created the Global News Relay with students broadcasting around the world for twelve hours collaborating with other institutions in the US, India, Australia, Malaysia, Norway.

I am an Apple Distinguished Educator which puts me among a group of global leading educators experimenting and utilising technology in the classrooms. My approach is based on mobile global collaborative learning. Funded research projects within education have used virtual reality for experiential learning in areas such as media and healthcare.

Research is focused on immersive realities (VR/AR), experiential film within 360 immersive storytelling. I look to building experiences that allow for immersion, using whatever technology I can get my hands on. I am working to define a form of film practice around immersive experiential film and play with ideas of multi sensory VR to enhance presence in an environment. I have worked with Google on a Digital News Initiative project, in collaboration with the Coventry Telegraph, building a VR game around the Blitz.

I am a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and previously served on the on the board of the Association of Journalism Educators. I am a Trustee of the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust. I hold external roles at Leeds Trinity, Southampton Solent and an examiner for the NCTJ.

Previously, I worked for ITV as a correspondent and news anchor. I have won awards for my investigative and immersive reporting. In 2007, I spent a year on secondment to New York for GMTV following Presidential candidates on the campaign trail.
